Join us for a two-day, hands-on workshop exploring how detection dogs are trained and deployed at NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs. This workshop is designed for anyone curious about detection dog work or looking to try something new with their pet so no previous experience required. Day One: Foundations of Detection Dog Training The first day focuses on the essential foundations of detection dog training, with live demonstrations from our operational detection dogs. Participants will learn about: Play-based training methods Building strong indications Foundation search development You’ll also have the opportunity to put your handling skills to the test by working with an operational detection dog. For those with more experienced dogs, we will cover troubleshooting common training challenges. Day Two: Developing the Search On the second day: Beginner dogs will continue developing foundational search skills using food or toy-based games. More experienced dogs will progress to searching on odour. Handlers are welcome to continue working with our operational detection dogs on this day as well. You’ll also have the chance to harness your own dog’s “inner search dog,” whether through simple foundation games or more advanced odour searches, depending on your dog’s experience level. Important Information Dates: 9-10th April 2026, 3-4th August 2026 Cost: £150 per person Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm (both days) Spaces: Limited Location: Dog's World, St Austell, Cornwall. There are toilet facilities, shops, and parking on site. Dogs are worked individually and will wait in vehicles when not working. Dogs attending do not need prior training or experience. Beginner dogs will search for their favourite toy or treats. ⚠️ Please note: Attendance at this workshop does not qualify you and your dog as a detection dog team. This is an informational and practical experience for those interested in the field or looking to explore detection-style training with their pet.

Cancellation Policy
Completion of the booking process and acceptance of our terms and conditions forms your contract with the NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs. Payment of the full course fees must be made in advance and are made at the time of placing a booking. It is not possible to attend a course unless payment has been received. We accept payment by PayPal, or online BACS. Cancellations-The full amount is payable at time of Booking, 50% is classed as the Deposit amount. Deposit is non-refundable. Any other payment will be refunded if the Attendee cancels his/her booking. If attendee can sell or find replacement for their space, in this case they can be fully refunded. Photography and Video/Audio Recording- Video, audio, or photographic records may not be taken at NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs events. Permission to take photographs however can be sought and may be given on a workshop-by-workshop basis. Without prior permission no video, audio or photographic recording of the event is permitted. Where permission is given to take photographs, photographs may be taken of the participant’s dog only, unless permission is sought directly from each attendee. Where permission is given to make video recording, video recording may be taken of the participant’s dog only, unless permission is sought directly from each attendee. NO audio recording is permitted this includes video. Video must be muted. NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs reserves the right to make photographic, video or audio recordings during events, such recordings to be used either for promotion or educational purposes. Where photographs or video are shared on social media credit for the event should be given to NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs. Non-registered animals-Unavoidable attendance by non-participant dogs is possible however please note that these dogs must be comfortable waiting quietly in a vehicle and must be exercised in designated areas. Females in season- It may be possible for a female in season, registered for the event, not to be excluded from participation. If an event-registered female comes into season immediately prior to the event, please contact The event Unfortunately, the Organisers retain the right to cancel or postpone the event at short notice. But NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs will not accept liability for reimbursement of consequential losses incurred by participants including travel or accommodation costs.
